Sedation Dentistry Options for Patients from Tyler and Beyond

For many people, just the thought of going to the dentist is almost too much to bear. For others, the problem isn’t anxiety but discomfort—some people just aren’t comfortable sitting in a dental chair for long periods of time. Whatever might be keeping you from actively seeking care, Tyler Dental Care has something that can help.

It’s called sedation dentistry.

With sedation dentistry, patients from Tyler, Longview, Palenstine, and surrounding areas can enjoy relaxing treatment that helps them reclaim oral health.

Three Great Sedation Dentistry Options To Choose From

Tyler Dental Care offers three types of sedation dentistry: nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and IV sedation. Each one can be effective, but which one you should choose depends entirely on your personal needs. If you only experience mild anxiety, nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation may be just what you need. With both, you’ll feel relaxed enough to receive the care you need while still remaining awake and able to respond to questions.

For patients with moderate to severe anxiety, though, IV sedation may be the more appropriate choice. With IV sedation, we have more precise control over your sedation levels and can take you to a deeper, more relaxed state than is possible with nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation.

If you’ve put off dental visits because of dental anxiety, call Dr. Dowd’s Tyler dental office today to find out how we can help. Our office serves patients from Tyler, Jacksonville, Palestine, Lindale, Longview, and surrounding areas.

It’s not spring yet, but warmer weather is already here. And with warmer weather comes thoughts of summertime.

Support Your Heart Health with Regular Care from Dr. Dowd and the Team at Tyler Dental Care

In our last post, we talked about the surprising connection between oral health and pneumonia. But the connection between your smile and the rest of your health goes further than that. Your smile and your heart are also connected, meaning that a good oral health routine—which includes regular dental visits—actually contributes to your overall health.

When your oral health isn’t a priority, though, bacteria and plaque can wreak havoc on your smile and your general wellbeing, eventually leading to the creation of pockets between your teeth and gums. Once they’ve formed, these pockets can be used by bacteria and plaque to travel to other parts of the body, including the heart.

But with regular visits to Tyler Dental Care, you can support your oral and overall health. During a regular visit with us, Dr. Dowd will check your smile for signs of gum disease. We’ll also remove built up bacteria and plaque from between your teeth and gums, ensuring that your smile is clean and pocket-free. If we do find signs of gum disease, we can immediately begin working with you on a treatment plan that will help you get your smile back into shape again.

If you’re ready for your next visit with Tyler Dental Care, call our office today to schedule an appointment with us. Dr. Dowd and our team serve patients from Jacksonville, Palestine, Lindale, Longview, and beyond.

The Surprising Connection Between Oral Health and Pneumonia

A recent article out of Nashua, New Hampshire, describes a surprising connection between oral health and pneumonia. The article (entitled “Better Oral Hygiene Could Reduce the Risk of Pneumonia According to Research From Yale University”) notes that changes in oral bacteria are connected to a patient’s risk for acquiring pneumonia.

But this isn’t the first time that oral health and respiratory illnesses have been linked. According to the article, “respiratory illnesses and oral health have been linked together for years as bacterial infections in the chest are believed to be caused by breathing droplets from the mouth and throat into the lungs.”

What’s more, other studies have indicated that patients with above average instances of gum disease have experienced a higher pneumonia mortality rate.

To protect your smile, you should of course do everything you can at home to support your oral health, like brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once daily.

But regular visits are also important.

At Dr. Dowd’s Tyler dental office, we have the skills necessary to treat medically compromised patients that other dentists may be hesitant to help. We work with their physician(s) to work out a plan that will keep them safe and comfortable while we’re doing their dentistry. And for patients who may have avoided visits because of anxiety or discomfort, we also offer sedation dentistry so that every patient’s visit can be as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

To find out more about the connection between oral health and pneumonia, click on the article title in parentheses. You can also schedule an appointment with Dr. Dowd by calling our Tyler office. We serve patients from Tyler, Jacksonville, Palestine, Lindale, Longview, and surrounding areas.

Have You Made Any Goals for Your Smile this January?

At the beginning of a new year, it’s not uncommon to set some goals for the next 12 months. If you’ve been thinking about doing this, why not think about what kinds of goals you can set for your smile?

For instance, you could resolve to brush for longer every morning and night. Or, you could resolve to invest in an electronic toothbrush, which can help you brush more efficiently.

But as great as these are, the one we think is absolutely necessary is a commitment to regular visits.

With regular visits to Tyler Dental Care, Dr. Dowd can help patients from Jacksonville, Palestine, Lindale, Longview, and beyond achieve optimal oral health and support their overall health. As recent studies have shown, poor oral health has been shown to share a connection with a range of other health problems, including diabetic complications, stroke, premature birth, Alzheimer’s, and even heart disease, among others.

Regular visits with Dr. Dowd can help you support your oral and overall health, because every visit with us gives Dr. Dowd a chance to check your smile for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, TMJ dysfunction, bruxism, and even oral cancer.

To schedule your first appointment of 2012, call Tyler Dental Care today. Dr. Dowd and the rest of our team want to help you make 2012 a banner year for your smile.

Dr. Dowd Provides Advanced Care to Tyler Patients with Galileos Technology

A revolutionary tool called Galileos is helping Dr. Dowd and Tyler Dental Care provide advanced care for patients in Tyler, Jacksonville, Palestine, Lindale, Longview, and surrounding areas.

What Is Galileos?

Galileos is a radiography device that uses cone beam cat scan technology to create vivid, three-dimensional images of a patient’s teeth and jaw.  With these images, Dr. Dowd can more easily education patients on their oral health, in addition to creating more detailed treatment plans for dental implant procedures and our other restorative services.

What’s more, Galileos even makes it easier for Dr. Dowd to spot certain types of oral cancer when they are in their earliest stages when the cure rate is still around 90%.”

Visit Our Office to Learn More about Galileos

Tyler Dental Care is the first and only office in the Tyler/Longview and surrounding areas to utilize Galileos.  If you’d like to know more about how this revolutionary technology can help us maximize our care to patients, call us today to schedule an appointment. Have a Dazzling Christmas with Teeth Whitening from Dr. Dowd

There doesn’t have to be snow on the ground for you to have a white Christmas. At Dr. Dowd’s Tyler dental office, we can help you brighten your smile by as many as 10 shades with a professional, in-office teeth whitening session.  And because in-office teeth whitening only takes one visit, you’ll have the dazzling smile you’ve been dreaming of just in time for any upcoming holiday parties, not to mention Christmas day itself.

Dr. Dowd even offers at-home teeth whitening as an added option if you’d like to touch-up your smile in the comfort of your own home. Or, if you’d rather whiten your smile gradually instead of coming in for a single visit, at-home teeth whitening is a perfect alternative. In one to two weeks, at-home whitening can provide you with the same professional results as in-office teeth whitening.

Here’s how at-home teeth whitening works. First, Dr. Dowd will take an impression of your teeth at our Tyler dental office. Then, a pair of whitening trays will be made from these impressions. Once your finished whitening trays are ready, we’ll provide you with the professional whitening gel you need. From there, all you’ll need to do is wear your whitening trays for the recommended period of time each day. Within a few days, you’ll begin to notice results.

USA Today Reports On the Benefits of Regular Cleanings

According to USA Today, a new study from Taiwan is confirming what many dentists have long been telling their patients—that regular dental cleanings will benefit your overall health, not just your smile. More specifically, the study finds that patients who visit the dentist regularly are at less risk for problems like heart attack and stroke.

Why might this be?

According to USA Today, “Professional teeth cleanings seem to reduce the growth of bacteria, which causes inflammation and can lead to the development of heart disease or stroke…”

So, how long has it been since your last visit? If it’s been more than six months, consider scheduling an appointment with Dr. Dowd at Tyler Dental Care. Especially with the holidays coming up, you want to know that you can enjoy the season to your fullest.

Dr. Dowd’s Tyler office can help. With just a quick oral exam and a regular cleaning, we can help you understand your oral health and get you back to your normal schedule with a stronger, cleaner smile. And thanks to LANAP, we can easily provide targeted treatment for any patient who may need treatment for gum disease.

Call us today if you’d like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Dowd. Our office serves patients from Tyler, Jacksonville, Palestine, Lindale, Longview, and surrounding areas.
